The Ewing Family, continued (page 9)

The Children of George Ewing & Eleanor Caldwell (continued)

Margaret Purdonia EWING * was born 7 Jun 1759. She died 15 Dec 1835.  Margaret was our direct ancestress.    She married Alexander E. Purdom, who died about 1802 in Greeneville, TN, and is buried probably in the Old Cemetery, Greeneville, Tennessee.      Margaret Purdom was mentioned in her father's will.

"The Hutchinson family of Laurens County, South Carolina, and descendants," page 192:  Footnote:   "On July 29, 1803, Margaret Purdom and William Dickson were appointed by the Court at Greeneville "guardians to the orphans of Alexander Purdom, late of this county."  In this document the middle name of Richard B. Purdom, varying from family records, is given as "Balfour" instead of Belknap.

"Alexander Purdom, the first member of his family of whom we have any knowledge, is said to have been of English descent.   Where or when he was born we do not know.  He made his home for a number of years in Washington County, Virginia, removing to Greeneville, Tennessee, probably in the middle 1790's.   The earliest known writing concerning him is a deed dated May 5, 1796, conveying to him an acre lot of ground in Greeneville which became his home.  He was a farmer.  Mr. Purdom's wife was named Margaret.  Her maiden name may have been Ewing."   All of their children were said to have been born in Virginia.

Notes of Robert Marshall McClure (2006):    Purdom Tavern-"Sign of the White Horse," Greeneville (TN); Alexander Purdom, prop., opened Feb. 16, 1795.

On death of Alexander, Margaret and William Dickson were appointed guardians of the children, one of whom was listed as Richard Balfour [sic] Purdom.   He is buried in the Old Cemetery, Greeneville, TN

From Genealogical Abstracts from Tenn Newspapers 1791-1808, Eddlemon, Sherida K.,
Heritage Books, 1540 E. Pointer Ridge Place, Bowie, MD 20776, (301)390-7709:
Feb 1795 - Knoxville Gazette - I have a tavern open to the public in Greenville"
 - Alexander Purdom
Aug 1796 - Knoxville Gazette - Letters remaining at the Knoxville Postoffice:
Joseph Allen care of Alexander Purdom, Greenville

Nothing is known about the origin of Alexander.  There has been speculation that he is of English origin but no hard evidence to date.  There are Purdoms in the   Maryland and Delaware areas which I have not tracked.

If anyone has further information about the PURDOM’s.... Please contact me!
