DAVIS FAMILY

As I’m sure you know, researching a family by the name of “Davis” can be a challenge!   If you study the early Census’ for the Abbeville/Ninety-Six, South Carolina area, the name JOSHUA DAVIS pops out at you the most.   I elected to pursue finding out more about him, and the records all seemed to point to the fact that Joshua Davis was the father of John Davis.    Others have confirmed this with me, and I thank them for their contributions.

JOSHUA DAVIS is believed  to have been born about 1770 in Virginia, died in 1859 in Abbeville, South Carolina.   He married twice, and had MANY children.

Abstracts of Re-recorded Burnt Conveyances in Abbeville Co, SC, contains an interesting hint that perhaps Joshua was from Mecklenburg, Co, VA:      PROMISSORY NOTE of Joshua Davis of Mecklenburg Co. Va to George Lumpkin of Wilkes; $1222; John Lumpkin and Vines Collier, witnesses; 25 Feb 1785. Loose paper.    [I have not proven that Joshua was from Mecklenburg, however.]

Joshua is in South Carolina by at least 1798, as his first child seems to have been born there.   He is on the 1810 Census with at least 6 children; the 1820 Census with 8 children.   1830 there are 6 children, and his wife is a younger woman (aged 20-30), while Joshua is in his 50’s now (so we know his first wife died between 1820-1830).     His second wife’s name is “Eliza,”  born about 1797.    At least 5 more children are born to Joshua by Eliza.    Joshua was still living in the 1850 Census, and from this we get the names of his five younger children.

We find that Joshua Davis died in 1859 from a lawsuit that involves his son Joseph W. Davis:

1858-1860:   ROBERTS and ADAMS DAVIS (Name of complainers); Joseph W DAVIS etal (Name of complained against) 4 91 1858-60 (Box number, pack number, year) debt (Type of document) Thomas J Roberts. James J Adams. Hodges Depot.  JOSEPH W. DAVIS in debt to the company.  Has no assets. JOSHUA DAVIS, HIS FATHER, dec 1859 i. Admin,  JOHN DAVIS. Joseph out of state. This is more or less a request to garnish inheritance.

I post what I know, so far, of his family.    I hope to hear from other descendants, and apologize that I have not done further work on all of his children....

JOHN DAVIS was the son of Joshua Davis and his first wife.   We know he was born about 1814, and he was still living in 1880, but I do not know exactly when he died.    He is mentioned frequently  in legal notices:

Abbeville District, South Carolina Newspaper Notices:

1855, June 8, Independent Press/Banner:  "In the Court of Ordinary}  Whereas application has been made to me by JOHN DAVIS and wife requiring the will of Mrs. SARAH PACE, deceased, to be…proved…notice is given to THOMAS W. PACE, AIKEN BRAZEALLE and wife LOUISA, LUCINDA JANE CANNON, child of HENRY and LUCINDA CANNON, SARAH JANE PACE and JOHN PICKNEY PACE, children of RICHARD PACE, deceased, SOPHRONIA HAYNES (widow), SARAH SHEPPARD, wife of ___ Sheppard, SELDON THOMAS, BENJAMIN, GEORGE, HENRY and JOHN THOMAS and CAROLINE and MARY THOMAS, children of MATILDA THOMAS, deceased."

1856, November, Independent Press:    "At the residence of SARAH PACE, deceased, I will on the 22nd day of November rent that valuable plantation for one year.   Said plantation lies on Long Cane Creek on the Cokesbury road six miles east of Abbeville Court House.   JOHN DAVIS, Adm'r."

1866, August 10, Abbeville Press:  "In the matter of the Real Estate of DAVID PACE, dec'd.  JAMES A. McCORD, Guardian, applicant against JOHN DAVIS and wife JANE, et al, defendants…THOMAS PACE, the children of MATILDA THOMAS, dec'd (names not known), the children of RICH'D PACE (names not known), defendants, reside beyond the limits of this State."

John Davis married SARAH JANE PACE (born about 1817, date of death unknown), the daughter of JOHN PACE & his wife SARAH.     She, too, was living in 1880, and we can only assume both of them have died by 1900.

I know my mother, Jeanne McClure Sanders, visited the JACKSON graves in Ninety-Six, SC (this was before I was born), for she told me so.    I can only assume that, perhaps, there is an old graveyard there that might contain the graves of both John and Sarah (Pace) Davis - hopefully buried with their daughter Martha Jane Davis who married Granville T. Jackson.    I traveled to Ninety-Six several years ago in hopes of learning more, but after checking with both the local library and the police-station, found that no one had any abstracts or maps of local cemeteries or family graveyards.     In fact, the Ninety-Six, SC library contained NO LOCAL HISTORY records!     No family histories of any kind!     I was terribly disappointed.

John Davis and Sarah Jane Pace had two daughters:

Frances E. DAVIS was born about 1836 in South Carolina. She died Bet 1860-1870.   Frances married William (Lee or M.) MCCORD. William was born about 1829.

"The genealogical record of some Mc Cord families in America "    "William L. McCord, youngest son of John and Elizabeth (Robertson) McCord, was born about 1829 and in 1850, according to the census of that year, he was aged 21, living at home and his occupation was given as "miller".  It is said that he went to East Texas and settled there in Milam in Sabine County.  His children in 1860 were John P. and Catherine. The following paragraph pertains to Wm Lee McCord:  From estate papers filed in Abbeville we gather that he married Frances E. Davis of that county.  There is a stone in the Long Cane Cemetery in Abbeville County for William L. McCord - born 1829; died 1906.  ****   However, there is this added note:   William Lee McCord, oldest son of Archibald McCord was born 1829, and died 1906.  He married 1) Frances Davis.  He was a Confederate soldier."

From the above, I believe they are saying that Wm L. McCord was the son of Archibald McCord!

Frances Davis and Mr. McCord had the following children:
+ 2 F i. Nancy Jane MCCORD was born about 1853.
3 M ii. John F. MCCORD was born about 1855 in Abbeville County, South Carolina.
4 F iii. Ann MCCORD was born about 1856 in Abbeville County, South Carolina.

LETTER FROM THOMAS JACKSON TO HIS SON GRANVILLE:

                               Bay Mount. - Tenn
   July 23, 1863

My Dear Son Granville ~

In great haste I seat myself to write you a few lines.   Our county here at this time is in a terrible condition.  The Federals are expected here daily.   The "Tories" cutting up all.  Every Southern man in this section have been robed (robbed, sic), but myself, & I am expecting to be every night.   I believe I wrote to you before that there were only eight Southern men in this settlement, and of course we can't defend ourselves.  A large company of my own neighbors left for KY last night, and the mountains are full of them here.   If I was not a lone man, & could get about, I would not fear them any - but as it is, I think I had better try and get any stock all to some safe place.   Will you Granville try and get a leave of absence for a few weeks & come home & help me move them.  You know I cant do it myself, and if they take what little I have to feed my family on next year, I am a ruined man.  Granville come if you can, and as soon as possible, too, as I'm so anxious about my stock.  My family, I think I will leave here until I see how they treat others, then perhaps I will have an opportunity to get them away.

Your Mother is not very well,  the girls are well, all sends love.  We have not heard one word from William for some time.  James' Co suffered severely at Vicksburg.  I hear all of the Officers were killed or wounded.

Granville if you have any love for your dear Mother,  & dear old crippled grey headed Father, I know you will try & come to my aid.

     In haste - Your Father
      THOS. JACKSON.

Write or come very soon.

July 12, 1863:   "A Card from Col. Rains.  The undersigned expresses his thanks to the military organizations of Augusta, and to the citizens of Richmond and adjoining counties, for the large and effective force placed so promptly at his disposal for the defense of the city and the Government Works on yesterday; over twelve hundred men were offered for service3 in less than six hours, consisting of cavalry, artillery and infantry, all well supplied with arms and ammunition, for immediate service.  To Capts. Dearing and G.T. JACKSON, (the latter with a piece of Captain Barnes' artillery under Lieut. Roberts,) whose command were in the advance beyond the city, I am indebted for the alacrity with which they responded to orde4rs.  The remaining companies were held ready for service by their commanders.  To the Confederate Officers temporarily in the city and not on duty, I express my thanks for their prompt offer of service.  Also to the Express Company for their prompt offer of assistance as an ambulance corps, and to the Mayor and city authorities for their cordial and energetic cooperation.   Geo. W. RAINS, Lt. Col. C.S.A. Comd'g.  Headquarters, Augusta, June 11th, 1863.

Alexander.   I know there will be a generous response by the people of Augusta and vicinity.  To them never wearied of well doing, there cannot be a more sacred duty or a more welcome pleasure than in ministering to the requirements of the poor and needy, in drying the tears of the widow and orphan and in evincing a proper spirit of gratitude toward the noble men who for four years have periled their lives for the defense of their soil.    Robert H.
