The Other Line of WALTON’S

This line of Walton’s is not my family but, interestingly enough, it is the line of a Watkins/Walton cousin of mine!   Mrs. Richards is related to both lines, and is the expert on this line (I’m not!).   I found that as I researched my line [of Augusta, GA], it was necessary to compile information on this line if I was to get the correct information and keep them straight.     I post some of my notes now, but please understand that I haven’t given them the same particular attention as I did the Augusta Walton’s.    All that being said, I am always interested in hearing from descendants of these lines!

This line starts with EDWARD WALTON.

I believe it possible that Edward was the son of JOHN WALTON, 1638 immigrant to Accomac Co, Virginia, but I haven’t proven that.   We know that the 1621 immigrant John was in Accomac County, as well...leaving a 1640 will naming his one-year old son also named John.  But baby John would have been too young to be receiving patents of land in 1651 for transporting 16 persons.    I believe it had to be this John.

In any case, EDWARD WALTON was in York County in 1671 and a young adult about to marry.  Waltons of Old Virginia and Sketches of Families in Central Virginia, by Wilmer L. Kerns [whose work I’ve always admired] relates his marriage to ELIZABETH, about 1671.     Is there another EDWARD?   Perhaps not.  The Gulf States Historical Magazine, Volume 2, page 116, states he was “from New Kent County,” according to St. Peter's Parish Register:

This is what I show in my database, but I always welcome corrections!

Edward  WALTON  -of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co, VA (b.Abt 1668/1672-New Kent Co,VA d.1720-St. Peter's Parish,New Kent County,Virginia)  married: Elizabeth [MASON (?)] (d.1726)

1)   Mary WALTON (a.4 Dec 1698)
2)   William WALTON of Goochland (VA) (a.25 Dec 1700 d.25 May 1747-Goochland County,VA)
 | sp: Susannah COBB (b.1702-New Kent Co,VA m.1730)
3)  Thomas (son of Edward) WALTON (a.20 Feb 1703/1704 d.27 Apr 1772-Cumberland Cty,VA)
 | sp: Martha COX (m.1734)
4)  Elizabeth WALTON (a.4 Feb 1707)
5)  John WALTON of Hanover County, VA  (b.8 Sep 1709-New Kent Co,VA d.Sept-Oct, 1772-Hanover,Co.,VA)   | sp: Mary SIMS (b.Abt 1718-Hanover,Co.,VA m.Abt 1735 d.1 Nov 1805)
6)   Edward (supposition)  WALTON -of Hanover County, VA  sp: Elizabeth

I only have information on a few of these children, William, Thomas, and John.

William WALTON of Goochland (VA) was born in St. Peter's Parrish, New Kent Co., VA and was christened 25 Dec 1700. He died 25 May 1747 in Goochland County, VA. Register of St. Peter's Parish, pages 41-60, New Kent Co., VA; pg 43:   William son of Edward Walton baptiz. the 25 Dec., 1700.
Notes of Eugenia Richards:  Although no absolute proofs have been found that the William Walton of Goochland is the same William Walton who was baptized Dec. 25, 1700, the son of Edward Walton, it is a fairly well accepted relationship.  The baptism record is found in the St. Peter's Parish Register, New Kent Co., VA.  The children of Edward Walton with dates listed in the register are: Mary, baptized Dec. 4, 1698, William, baptized Dec 25, 1700, Thomas, baptized Feb 20, 1703/4, Elizabeth christened Feb 4, 1707, and John born Sept 8, 1709.
If a birth date of around 1700 is accepted for William Walton of Goochland, he may have married in the 1720s.  Court records can be found for him in Goochland Co at least as early as 1731.  In that year, the Virginia Land Office files show a William Walton and a Thomas Walton each with 400 acres in Goochland Co. on Muddy Creek on the south side of the James River.  Thomas Walton is William's brother as per the St. Peter's Parish Register of New Kent Co., VA.
A deed of 26 Feb. 1738 on page 190 of Goochland Co., VA Wills and Deeds 1736-1742 records the sale from William Walton of St. James Parish Goochland to Ralph Flippen of the same Co. and Parish for Ð 45 for 400 acres in same parish on the south side of the James River, bounded by John Merriman.  The witnesses to this deed were Robert Walton, Stephen Bedford, John Hodges and Wm. Layne.  The deed was signed by William Walton and Susannah Walton.  It certainly could be that this 400 acres sold to Ralph Flippen was the same 400 acres William got from the Land Office in 1731.
There is another record in the same year, on page 192 of the same book, this time William was buying land.  On March 19 1738, William Cannon of St. James Parish Goochland Co., sold to William Walton of the same Parish and County for Ð 65 land on the north side of James River, on Rockfish Creek, 300 acres.  The witnesses were three of the same men who had signed for William back in February:  John Hodges, Robert Walton, and William Layne, Sr.  Rockfish Creek is in what is now Fluvanna Co, VA.  The little town of Hardware, VA is in the vicinity.
William Walton of Goochland shows up with at least two other parcels of land in the VA Land Office Files - both dated 10 July 1745.  One was 400 acres on both sides of the north branch of Walton's Fork of the Slate River.  The other was 220 acres on both sides of Slate River.
The VA Land Office Files show one more William Walton patent for 1020 acres of land in Albemarle Co. on both sides of Walton's Fork of the Slate River.  This document is dated 12 July 1750 but is no doubt land William Walton contracted for before he wrote his will.  William willed his children 2,520 acres of land and even with this 1020 acres of 1750, the acreage of land shown in the several transactions above does not total 2,520 acres.  There may be more land deeds in the deed book which follows the 1736-1742 book referred to above in the 1738 deeds.

                                                                          William Walton
Sealed and signed in the presence of us:  George Walton, James (his mark) Prophet
These words in the tenth line of the last side "and my desire is that my estate be not appraised" were enterlined before signed.           Goochland Co., VA Will Bk 5, p379
