Richer III de l’Aigle, 6th baron de l’Aigle, died in 1176.  He was the successor of his father and held the baronnie for fifteen years.   There are 3 charters, not of the same dates, that make mention of him:    “Dans l'une, par laquelle il ajoute de nouveaux dons a ceux que son pere avait faits a la leproserie de la Madeleine, il engage le bourgeois de la ville a veiller a la conservatin de cet etablissement, par affection pour lui et pour leur propre interet.”  Another charter was made in the presence of his three sons, Gilbert, Richer and Engenouf, and he approved and confirmed several gifts made by Eremberge d’Ecubley, a dependent of the l’Aigle estate.   A third charter, in which he states he was the son of Richer, who was the son of Gilbert, he accorded several rights and exemptions with the monks of Saint-Evroult and aux hommes de leur metairie d'Auguaise.   In 1172 Henry II took a record of the number of knights who owed service to him and to his barons, known as the "Infeudationes Militum", just as he had already ordered an even more comprehensive English survey six years earlier.  Those barons who made no response to the inquest, including several stalwart upholders of ducal administration, were nevertheless recorded for defaulting.    Footnote:  Non respondents associated with ducal rule included the archbishop of Rouen, the bishop of Evreux, Doon Bardolf and Hamelin, earl Warenne.  Frontier lords included the counts of Eu, Evreux, Aumale and Meulan, and RICHER DE L'AIGLE (for de l'Aigle itself, although he was recorded for Crepon near Bayeux).

He apparently inherited the manor of Ailrichescot (South Tawton) in Devon from his father and passed it on to their daughter, Constance.   Lucie appears to have married  first Thibault de Mathefelon, no issue?      Always keep in mind that children often used their mother’s name, not just their father’s.   More research needed.      These are some of the descendants I have, so far, for Lucie and Richard:

Engenulf de l’Aigle.   The only notes I have, so far, on Engenulf state he was a “clerk.”

Roger de l’Aigle.   Perhaps this is the Roger de l’Aigle who was Abbé de Saint-Ouen, Rouen.

Félicie de l’Aigle.    Named in Historie, "nommée Julienne, qui était prieure a Chaise-Dieu en 1218"

Juliana de l’Aigle married William de Courci.   Histoire states that she was Prioress de Chaise-Dieu en 1155.

Some of what I learn from researching Juliana’s descendants, is that the line of Jordan went to Ireland.     Their entire history for the next couple of hundred years seems to be filled with murder and revenge.   I have proven unequal to the task of sorting them all out [but I don't think I'm alone in that!].   Experts differ, from book to book.    I only show a couple of generations here.   Surely there were daughters amongst them, as you find names such as "MacJordan Duff," which I can only assume was the result of a marriage to a Duff.    On the whole, these men seem to have prospered, in spite of the violence of the times, and some held high offices.  But generation after generation suffered violent deaths.    There do seem to have been two main branches in Ireland:   one that, for awhile, styled themselves "de Exeter" [or variations thereof] and the other "MacJordan."   The given names repeat, generation after generation, and so sorting them correctly seems next to impossible.  To add to the confusion, during the medieval period, English settlers began "Irishing" their names, such as:  De Burgh began calling himself "MacWilliam,"   De Exeter - "MacJordan," and Bermingham - "MacFerris."  "Dexter" became Destrier or Dextrier; also Dexcestre and Dexecester.   Any help always appreciated, especially in this case~   and I will gladly share the notes collected.   [vsm]

 | sp: Richard II DE LA FERTE-FRESNEL

Gilbert II de l’Aigle, 7th baron de l’Aigle, was baron for 54 years; he died in 1231 and is buried in Saint Sulpice.   Gilbert maintained fidelity with Richard “The Lion Heart,” who he considered his legitimate liege.  Richard “camped” at l’Aigle.  Of his lands in ENGLAND,  He eventually recovered his lands in the rape of Pevensey, holding them almost uninterrupted until his death, but it was another blood relative of the Fougeres, Ralph de Meulan, who recovered Ipplepen…"

In NORMANDY he  donated property to Notre-Dame de la Trappe by charter dated 1211.    In 1132, Richer de l’Aigle had donated land in the forest of l’Aigle to Hugues du Desert for the establishment of a convent and church, that was named Chaize-Dieu.   In 1209, Gilbert and his wife “Elisabeth”, and their sons Gilbert and Richer, confirmed the gifts done by their father and grandfather.   Chaize-Dieu was located in the “Prieure parish of the same name, Evreux diocese.’    The coats of arms of the family is on the big door of the monastery; in the church existed the graves of two ladies del’Aigle; and on one of them was this inscription:  "Hic jacet ODELINA, domina of AQUILA, filia committees sancta-suzanna" (Angers, Archives of Fontervr., box chaize-dieu.)

Gilbert married Isabel (Elizabeth) de Warenne Plantagenet, widow of Robert de Lacy.   Two known children:  Gilbert and Richer, both of whom died without heirs.   Were there perhaps daughters who had married and lived in England?    Alice?  Margaret?   The title and ancestral lands would pass from their sons to the d’Avaugour line, see Alice next.      (see next page)

Alice or Adélaïde de l’Aigle married Alain D'Avaugour.   It is through Alice that the title “baron de l’Aigle” descended after the deaths of her nephews Gilbert and Richer, sons of her brother Gilbert, 7th baron.   Her son, Henri II d’Avaugour was 10th Baron de l'Aigle - Comte de Penthièvre.    Here is some of what I know of her descendants, so far:    There are many descendants who used the title “seigneur” or “dame” de l’Aigle.   Anyone with information on these families, I would love any information!       The list of “Barons” de l’Aigle from Alice.
