Capt. James Ewing.    James Ewing was born about 1712 in Ulster, Ireland. Have seen other sources that date his birth closer to 1703.  He was the son of William Ewing and his second wife. James Ewing emigrated with his brothers, and took up his abode in what became Prince Edward County, Virginia.   James died 1788 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He married Anne Dunn. The birth of James is estimated based on a deposition recorded in the Cecil County, Maryland Land Commissions records 1724-1751 dated October 28, 1736 where he states his age as about 24 years.

It is said that a Charles and Robert Ewing, brothers, born in County Londonderry, Ireland about 1715-1725, were cousins of Nathaniel Ewing, and on their arrival in America they went first to his home in Cecil County, Maryland, but shortly after accompanied their cousin, the emigrant James Ewing, Nathaniel's half-brother, to what became Prince Edward County, Virginia, and later they joined a new adventurous colony and settled near the Peaks of Otter in Bedford County, Virginia, where they remained until they died.   At least some of the Ewings remained there until they died. James, however, either himself or his offspring ended up in Monroe County, Virginia [now West Virginia].  Early on, this part of Virginia was a portion of Augusta County, then became Greenbrier County, and finally was set off as Monroe County.    James was a witness to a will in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1741/42. James purchased land in Amelia County, Virginia on 16 May 1746 (Deed Book 2 page 315).

1777:  James Ewing was a Captain in the Augusta County, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution. See "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, 1745-1800. Extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County" by Lyman Chalkley: Volume I, Order Book VII, Page 253 [Court Grants Qualification of Captain] & Order Book IX, Page 344  [allowing claim for provisions] & Order Book XVI, Page 191 [Captain James Ewing resigned].

Known children of James are:

i.   Samuel Ewing, born about 1747 in Amelia County, Virginia. He married Eleanor Gillespie. She was the daughter of Patrick Gillespie  and Isabell Ritchie. Samuel died before 24 Feb 1805 in Clarke County, KY. They had no children. His will was recorded 24 Feb 1805 in Clarke County, Kentucky.
ii.   William Ewing, born about 1749 in Amelia County, Virginia. He married Florence Porter {4353} about 1770. She is the daughter of John Porter and Mary Anthony. William died before 1799 in Logan County, Kentucky.
iii.   Eleanor Ewing, born about 1755. She married John Davidson 4 Dec 1778 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
iv.   Elizabeth Ewing, born about 1758/1759. She married William Davidson 21 Jan 1782 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

Eleanor and Elizabeth were added to this family based on the research information sent by Congressman Tom Ewing a descendant of James Ewing.             I have not further researched this family; any information welcomed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

George Ewing was born about 1715 in Ulster, Ireland. He was the son of William Ewing and his second wife. George died 1798 in Spartanburg County, SC. He married Catherine Lawson about 1752. She was born about 1738. She was the daughter of Hugh Lawson. George died at the age of 80 between 20 Aug 1797 the date of his will and 1 Nov 1798 when his will was recorded for probate. He lived in Prince Edward County, Virginia, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

Known children of George are:

i.    Mary Ewing, born about 1754 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. She married Richard Davidson  about 1768.
ii.   Catherine Ewing, born about 1757 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
iii.  Hugh Ewing, born 2 Mar 1762 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He married Sarah Armstrong  2 Feb 1786.
iv.   Ann Ewing.
v.    Margaret Ewing.

I have not further researched this family; any information welcomed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Henry Ewing, last child of William Ewing, II:      The only information I can find about Henry states:   Henry also lived in East Nottingham, and had three sons:  John, Moses and James.  John died in the 94th year of his age.  Moses, the only one that married, left one daughter - who lived on the old family residence.

Perhaps that is the reason there is very little information about Henry.... if only his son Moses married, and he left only one daughter, about whom little is known?

Resumed information about the children of William Ewing (originator)

Patrick Ewing was born 11 Nov 1657.    Patrick's birth was also registered in Derry Cathedral Register.   That is all I know about Patrick.   Any information welcomed!

=============================================================================================

John EWING - "Of Carnshanaugh" was born about 1648 in Carnshanaugh Parish of Gahan City, Donegal, N. Ireland. He died 1745.   Several sources claim that William Ewing & Elizabeth Milford had a son named John.    John Ewing was an official in Londonderry at the time King James II besieged the city in 1689.      One account of the siege states:    "Unable to take the place (Londonderry) by storm, the leaders of the Irish Catholic army resorted to a most brutal plan by which they hoped to break the resistance of the city.  They gathered hundreds, some writers tell us thousands, of children, women and old men, and drove them, all Protestants, shelterless and foodless, under the walls of Derry, giving notice that they would be left to starve there unless the city surrendered.  "This fiendish device failed.  The victims exhorted the defenders to stand firm, and instant death was proclaimed by any one uttering the word surrender.  May a man saw his aged father and mother forced up to the walls by the soldiers at the point of the pike and was powerless to help."   Fortunately the defenders of the town had captured some of the important men of the Jacobites.   Preparations were made to hang these on the walls of the town in full sight of the Catholic army, unless the dying men, women and children without the city should be permitted to return home at once.  This threat produced the hope for result; but not before many Protestants died of exposure, disease and hunger.   The sufferings of those victims were intense, and all the details of the harrowing story have never been recorded."

"Macaulay wrote:  "The number of men within the walls capable of bearing arms was seven thousand (including able bodied citizens who fought with the soldiers) and the whole world could not have furnished seven thousand men better qualified to meet a terrible emergency with clearer judgment, more dauntless valor, and more stubborn patience.

"As civilians and in the military ranks several of the ancestors of the American Ewing's participated in this defense of Londonderry.  There is a tradition in the James L. Ewin family, Washington, DC, that an ancestor was in command of troops in that battle.  Nearly every branch has some tradition of ancestral participation in that memorable defense.  Unfortunately history and military rosters are so incomplete upon this subjected that we are left largely to tradition."
